Amidst generally weak market conditions, the Nordex Group again achieved an increase in sales in 2009 according to preliminary calculations, closing the year with a substantial net consolidated profit. Consolidated sales climbed to EUR 1,183 million (previous year: EUR 1,136 million). As expected, however, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) declined to EUR 40 million (previous year: EUR 63 million) due to higher structural costs. Accordingly, the personnel expense ratio widened from 6.9 percent to 9.2 percent. In the fourth quarter of 2009, Nordex achieved a EBIT margin of 5.3 percent for capacity utilization reasons on sales of EUR 369 million. Consolidated net profit for fiscal year 2009 came to EUR 24.2 million (previous year: EUR 49.5 million).

As fossil fuels continue to diminish and climate change poses an ever-increasing threat, scientists around the world are searching for new and more efficient methods of generating energy. Wind energy is one of the more promising alternative energy sources and Norwegian scientists are currently in the development stages of what promises to be the world’s largest wind turbine. As if creating the biggest wind turbine in the world was not enough, it also floats. Current plans for the world’s largest wind turbine have the machine standing 533 feet tall.

An offshore North and Baltic Sea electricity grid could be in place within 10-15 years, but its development is being slowed by political and regulatory differences between countries bordering the North and Baltic Seas, according to a report published by the OffshoreGrid consortium. The European Commission-funded consortium – made up of eight organizations* – stated that offshore wind farm developers, operators and traders see a harmonization of electricity market and electricity transmission rules across Europe as essential for the future offshore grid.National and EU policy makers, being more cautious, would rather opt for making the existing support schemes compatible.

Today the European Parliament voted on a draft Council Regulation on the notification of investment projects in energy infrastructure within the European Union. EWEA said that today’s vote in the European Parliament better reflects the reality of investments in today’s electricity sector than the Council proposal. The European Council proposed notification of investments in wind farms larger than 20 MW, ignoring the large number of onshore wind farms which are below 20MW in size. Instead the Parliament proposes that investments in wind projects of more than 5 MW onshore, and 20 MW offshore, would have to be notified to the European Commission.

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently released new estimates of the U.S. potential for wind-generated electricity, tripling previous estimates of the size of the nation’s wind resources. The new study, which was carried out by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and AWS Truewind, finds that the contiguous 48 states have the potential to generate up to 37 million gigawatt hours annually. By contrast, total U.S. electricity generation from all sources was roughly 4 million gigawatt hours in 2009. The estimates show the total energy yield that could be generated using current wind turbine technology on the nation’s windy lands. (The estimates show what is possible, not what will actually be developed.)
