Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has been awarded a contract by project developer ABO Wind for the construction of a further two wind farms with a total of 13 N117/2400 onshore turbines. Located in the German regions of Central Hesse and Franconia, the planned farms will be going on grid this year after the project finance has been finalised. With two wind farms already under construction and also located in Central Hesse and Franconia, the project volume being jointly executed by Nordex and ABO Wind will thus rise to 51.2 megawatts this year. Effective from December 31, 2011, REpower Systems SE has acquired by purchase the remaining 49% stake in PowerBlades GmbH from SGL Rotec GmbH & Co. KG, a majority company of SGL Group. PowerBlades, headquartered in Bremerhaven, was founded in 2007 as a joint venture for the production of rotor blades for wind turbines. Since the beginning of the cooperation, REpower has held 51% of PowerBlades GmbH while SGL Rotec had 49% of the shares. The transaction is subject to the usual antitrust approval.

Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex recorded new orders of around EUR 400 million in the fourth quarter of 2011 (Q4/2010: EUR 306 million), translating into a 32 percent full-year increase in new business to EUR 1.1 billion in 2011 (2010: EUR 836 million). Originally, Nordex had projected growth of 20 percent to EUR 1 billion. The largest Nordex wind farm in Ireland to date is to be installed as of August 2012. The project is called “Garracummer” located in county Tipperary and is to go on grid with 17 N90/2500 machines. The customer is the state-owned utility Bord Gais Energy. Gamesa and the New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) signed a contract that has the Spanish wind turbine manufacturer to supply wind turbines for Egypt’s Gabal el Zeit wind farm. Located about 400 km south of Cairo, the 200 MW project is funded by German’s KfW Development Bank, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the EU through its Neighborhood Investment Facility (NIF). In 2010, it was also reported that Japan had granted a $432-million soft loan for the project.

With the Production Tax Credit (PTC), wind power’s key policy incentive, set to expire at the end of the year, industry members and advocates will be pushing for a PTC extension so that the industry can grow to nearly 100,000 jobs just four years from now. Meantime, developers will be busy getting wind farms built and online by year’s end.

ACCIONA Energy’s wind park at Golice has just entered service in Poland, the first installed by the company in the country. It represents an investment of around 223 million zlotys (57 million euros at the current exchange rate). Its 38 MW of installed capacity will generate clean electricity equivalent to the consumption of around 40,000 Polish homes and will avoid the emission of 77,625 metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere per year.

Nordex has now passed a major milestone towards the series production of the N117/2400 onshore turbine: On 16 December 2011, it installed the first version of this model at the “Stadum” citizens’ wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein. Nordex USA, Inc. announced a new order from developer WKN USA, LLC, a BayWa Group Company, for its 30 MW Mozart Wind Farm. The 12 Nordex N100/2500 wind turbines on 80 meter towers will be located about 60 miles northwest of Abilene, Texas, in an area that led the country in wind energy installations over the last decade. DONG Energy has acquired a 33.3% stake in the first two offshore wind projects in the Hornsea zone from SMart Wind, the 50/50 joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens’ Financial Services unit, represented by Siemens Project Ventures GmbH. The wind projects, Heron Wind Ltd and Njord Ltd., have a potential total capacity of up to 1GW.

This calendar year, Siemens won six contracts for offshore wind farms with a total capacity of about 1.4 gigawatts (GW) – enough to supply clean electricity to more than 1.4 million homes. The latest success was the award of the Amrumbank West project in the North Sea, for Amrumbank West GmbH, a subsidiary of E.ON AG. Siemens has brought in two additional orders each from Germany and the UK. It also got its first offshore wind project in China – an entry into one of the world’s most promising markets for the use of offshore
wind power.

Siemens and Shanghai Electric intend to set up two new joint ventures to form a strategic alliance for the Chinese wind power market. Corresponding agreements were signed on December 8, 2011, in Shanghai by the two companies. The aim of this alliance is to better serve China as the world’s largest wind power market. In each of the two joint ventures, Siemens will have a stake of 49 percent and its Chinese partner Shanghai Electric 51 percent. One of the joint ventures will be engaged in R&D and production of wind turbine equipment for the Chinese market and for Siemens’ global supply network. The second joint venture will be responsible for wind turbine equipment sales, marketing, project management and execution as well as service in China. Siemens is thus continuing with the regionalization of its wind power business in key markets, and Shanghai Electric will further improve its core competitiveness. The agreements are subject to the approval of the anti-trust authorities.
