REpower Systems AG, in which Suzlon Energy Limited is a majority shareholder with over 90 per cent holding – officially inaugurated a new technology center at Osterrönfeld, in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, Germany, on the 25th of August at the hands of the Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein, Minister President Carstensen and the REpower Executive Board. The new centre will bring together around 470 employees, from the fields of Research and Development, as well as Technical Support and Services, earlier spread across offices in Rendsburg, Büdelsdorf and Husum.

Back in 2008, Xcel Energy began testing a one-megawatt wind energy battery-storage system, using NGK Insulators Ltd.’s sodium- sulfur (NaS) battery technology. The objective was to demonstrate the system’s ability to store wind energy and move it to the electricity grid when needed, and to assess the viability of greater wind penetration on Xcel Energy’s system.

A new government study shows that Americans are using less energy overall and making more use of renewable energy resources. The United States used significantly less coal and petroleum in 2009 than in 2008, and significantly more wind power. There also was a decline in natural gas use and increases in solar, hydro and geothermal power according to the most recent energy flow charts released by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The negotiations following last week’s announcement of layoffs in Denmark have now been concluded. 154 employees in Vestas Nacelles and Vestas Blades are expected to be laid off.

The Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein officially inaugurated the new technology center of REpower Systems AG today in Osterrönfeld in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. Minister President Carstensen and the REpower Executive Board cut the red ribbon and symbolically opened the building. The opening ceremony was attended by more than 100 guests of honor. Around 470 employees, primarily from Research and Development, Technical Support and Service, are accommodated at the new research and technology complex. Previously, these departments were located at sites in Rendsburg, Büdelsdorf and Husum.

Vestas, the world’s leader in producing high-tech wind power systems, announced today it will move its North American sales and service headquarters into the historic Meier & Frank Depot Building at 1417 NW Everett St. in Portland’s Pearl District. Gerding Edlen Development, Inc., will transform the sturdy structure, vacant since 2001, into one of Portland’s newest and distinctive buildings. Construction is expected to begin in October 2010. Vestas plans to occupy the space in early 2012.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel today commenced her “energy tour” in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. During a visit to Nordex’s rotor blade production plant in Rostock, she will be conducting talks with representatives of companies active in the wind power industry. The background to this tour, which will be continuing over several days, is the energy policy, the main elements of which the German federal government plans to announce at the end of September.

Wind turbine manufacturer Clipper Windpower, Inc. has been selected to join a powerhouse consortium of industry and academic leaders to help reach the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) goal of achieving 20 percent wind power nationwide by 2030. The consortium’s mission, made possible through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding, supports research to advance production of wind-generated energy. Clipper’s 2.5 megawatt Liberty turbine will be the centerpiece of a full-scale field site at the University of Minnesota’s UMore Park property in Rosemount, MN.

Vestas generated second-quarter revenue of EUR 1,007m, a drop of 17 per cent relative to the second quarter of 2009, realising an EBIT of EUR (148)m, against EUR 78m in the second quarter of 2009. The EBIT margin thus declined from 6.4 per cent to (14.7) per cent as a result of the expected very low capacity utilisation in the wake of the credit crisis. Net working capital stood at 25 per cent of expected annual revenue, against 12 per cent the year before. The second-quarter order intake was 3,031 MW, which was the highest level ever recorded and on a level with the order intake for the whole of 2009.
